In 1955, the Office of Foreign Buildings Operation, the US Department of State, and Gordon Bunshaft, the architect from the firm of Skidmore, Owings & Merrill officially commissioned the artist for consular buildings in Düsseldorf and Bremen. For the new Düsseldorf Consulate-General building, Bertoia created a unique rectangular gong set inside a metal frame, which is unlike any other work he created during his prolific career and one of his earliest sounding sculptures. In 1958, the work was relocated to the Consulate General Office Building in Munich.
